Resistance Was Futile | Second Life has Assimilated Me
I finally gave in. I created my own Second Life avatar and logged in for the first time. The buzz about the business and marketing implications just got to be too much and I had to try it out for myself. I’ve been leery to take the SL (my first bit of Second Life vernacular) plunge since I don’t even have enough time for my first life.
It was scary how easily immersed you can become "in world." I checked out Gary Leland’s (of Podcast Pickle) Podcast Island, but nobody was around.
I can feel some very cool things forming out of this phenomenon. The imminent shock waves are undeniable. It’s very interesting the number of podcasters that do Second Life. I guess the social media & online nature of it make it a natural crossover.

You probably experience what Mitch Joel calls a “mind melt” once you got in there, Jason.
It’s happened to me a few times, too. Watched streaming video in there yet? Check out the Reuters building. Streaming audio? Try and attend a Second Life “launch” event, which seems to be happening every week or so now. I was at two in the last couple of weeks — one at Crayonville and another at Toyota’s Scion City Launch. Pretty wild when you see cars, start dancing on stage, and drink virtual Coca-Cola.
It is easy to get engrossed in the Second Life world, though its usability still leaves plenty to be desired. But I’m an optimist here, and I continue to be blown away by the online innovation that’s going on. Second Life is a perfect example of that.
See you in Second Life, Jason.

Wow. I can tell there is a lot I still have to discover in SL. I’ll be sure to check out some of your suggestions. I can tell things are really in an early stage still, but there is a lot of potential there.
Right now I’m contending with how to design an avatar that is original but still looks good.
