Promoting Your Podcast from A to Z - ID3 Tags

Did you know that there’s information in your MP3 file that you can use to promote your podcast? MP3 files contain ID3 tags. This is the data that describes the album, artist, track #, etc. These tags can, and should, be used to include information about your podcast.

Always fill in the ID3 tags and be consistent.

Not only is this good practice, it builds goodwill with your listeners. Your podcast will be easier to organize and listen to if you properly complete the ID3 tags. Media players use this information to sort your podcast and display information about. It’s just as (or more) important to keep current listeners as it is to find new ones. Poor use of ID3 tags is one sure way to lose listeners.

In chapter 10 of Promoting Your Podcast, you’ll learn:

  • How to complete your ID3 tags to keep your audience happy and listening
  • How to use the ID3 tags to promote your podcast and drive more traffic to your site
  • The best conventions to use for each of the tags
  • How to edit ID3 tags in iTunes

Are ID3 tags the information pod directories use to identify your podcasts and they are the terms that users can search for your podcast or is it somthing else. For instance I know you identify yourself in your ID3 tags. However when I went to PodNova and searched for your name it didn’t find it. However when I searched for Podcasting Underground it did find that. How can you make sure a pod directory has you listed in multiple searchable words so if users search for you by name, podcast title, even perhaps episode name? Thanks in advance for your help.

    All the best,

    Ted,

Directories do not typically use information from the ID3 tags. ID3 tags are used by media and mp3 players to display artist, track, album etc.

The directories get the information that they display from your feed file.

As for Podnova not returning my podcast when you search my name, this must be a shortcoming in their search algorithm because my name is included in the description for Podcasting Underground. My name appears even appears in the listing on their site. Maybe they only search the titles.
