Free Online, On-Demand Podcasting Seminar from Apple
Here are three video tutorials on podcasting from Apple, titled The Podcast Recipe. They can be viewed online for free with Quicktime. I’m not sure why, but they don’t let you download them to watch on your video iPod.
There are three videos: Perform, Produce & Promote. Perform talks about voice and mic technique. Produce walks you through how to record and edit your podcast with Garageband. The Promote video is a just basic, but good, overview of how iTunes works as a podcatcher and podcast directory.
Two popular questions are addressed in the Promote video…
Q: How do I know how many subscribers I have?
A: The files are hosted on your own site. Look at your sever logs.
Great….except I would like to know on a daily basis how many people are clicking subscribe from the iTunes directory. When do we get to see that?
Q: How do I get featured in the iTunes podcast directory?
A: Apple get’s far more requests for this than we can fulfill. You can’t buy your way into it. It is purely an editorial decision. They try to balance major media and indie podcasts. They look for podcasts that are breaking the mold (the example is given of Fader Magazine who started using their podcast feed to distribute a PDF file of their mag).
Naturally, the tutorials are Apple-centric (they almost make it sound like Ask a Ninja got big because he submitted his show to iTunes), but I didn’t find them overly so. There are some interesting tidbits of info, especially if you are new to podcasting. Viewing the tutorials is free, but requires filling out some information.
