Free Legal Guidance for U.S. and Canadian Podcasters

Like most podcasters you’ve probably come across legal questions as you think about how to keep yourself out of trouble. There are many pitfalls that can hit even the smallest of podcasts.

  • Can I play popular music on my podcast?
  • Can I can get in trouble for saying something unkind about another person or organization?
  • How do I credit people for their work so I don’t get in copyright trouble?

The good news is that there is help AND it’s free. For some time now, the Creative Commons organization has offered a Podcasting Legal Guide (US version). This is an excellent reference, but it was written based on United States law.

Well, now our northern counterparts can get the same help. Creative Commons have just released the Podcasting Legal Guide for Canada. On the Creative Commons Canada blog we read:

More than just an adaptation of the original U.S. Guide, this version required an almost complete rewrite of the copyright sections to describe Canadian law, as well as substantial changes to the discussions of trade-marks and publicity rights.
