Podcasting for Search and the Long Tail

In my book, Promoting Your Podcast, I emphasize the importance of publishing your podcast to a blog. There are numerous reasons to do so. One key reason is to attract search engine traffic. Search engines such as Google like blogs. They know that the information is frequently updated.

Keep the search engines in mind as you produce your podcast, post your show notes and optimize your site (all discussed in my book). I point out in my chapter on search engine optimization that it takes time, patience and diligence to see the promotional/traffic effects.  You have to constantly try, track and tweak things (which is why I included a also included chapter on statistics & tracking).

New Podcasting Demographics from Podtrac

Podtrac LogoPodtrac, a provider of podcast advertising solutions, released new figures today about podcast demographics. The information comes from online surveys conducted with over 22 million podcast listeners and viewers. Podtrac states that they have the largest database of such information available.

Podcast Audience Retention

Today is catch-up-on-my-podcasts day. I’ve made a goal to make it up to all my listeners for my slacking the past several weeks. June will be a very prolific podcasting month for me.

Despite my slacking, two of my podcast’s audiences have continued to grow in size. The third has stayed the same. I haven’t lost any listeners as far as I can tell. I’m not condoning letting things slip, but it’s still interesting to note that my listener base has stayed strong.

80% of Podcasts Never Make it to a Portable Player?

Podcasting, for me, is fundamentally based on a listenening experience of control and convenience. The listener controls when, where and how they listen to the program.

(Podcasting is also based on the social media revolution and dissillusion with the mainstream “one-way-pipe” media that has spoon fed us for years now, but I want to focus on the control/convenience in this post.)
