Regular Blog Posts from the Association for Downloadable Media

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

A couple weeks ago I set up a new site and blog for the Association for the Downloadable Media. Since the launch several of the founding members of the ADM have been blogging on an almost daily basis. You should take a look since there’s some interesting content from a variety of interesting people involved in podcasting.

Here are three posts that I especially recommend.

No Love for PodShow at the Corporate Podcasting Summit in London

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Their was an interesting panel on podcast sponsorships this afternoon. Actually, the most interesting part was, that on three occasions, the PodShow representative gave what seemed like a “political side step” answer to questions directed at him about numbers and examples from PodShow’s sponsorship campaigns.

One audience member asked for a ballpark figure of how many of PodShow’s podcasters have been able to quit their day job. Another asked to have an estimate of how much podcasters can make with PodShow sponsorships. Now, giving the benefit of the doubt, maybe he really didn’t “have the information with him.” But it seemed to me that he was either poorly prepared or purposefully vague.

Dynamic Insertion of Podcast Ads | Todd Cochrane is Not Seeing the Whole Picture

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

I just read a post by Todd Cochrane (author of the first “podcast how to” book and CEO of RawVoice) condemning the dynamic insertion of ads in podcasts as DOA. I disagree. I think it’s only getting started.

First, a quick definition of dynamic insertion. This simply means that the podcast audio and the audio for the ad are put together on the fly rather than the ad being “hard” recorded into the original audio file. This allows the ad to change over time for the same episode. Now back to Todd’s opinion.

Podcasting Metrics Series Pt 3 | Measuring Downloads

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

In Podcasting Metrics Series Part 2, I pointed out the problem with looking at the # of hits to a file for estimating the # of downloads. A single download can result in many hits. The hits stat will always be bigger than the actual number of downloads.

So how can we get a more accurate idea of the number of downloads? Services that offer podcast metrics (e.g. Libsyn, Podpress, Feedburner, Podtrac, RadioTail Ripple etc.) track things such as the IP address of each request to a file to determine how many unique users have downloaded (or at least attempted to download) the podcast file. This leads to a more accurate, although still imperfect, measurement.

Adsense for Podcasts…How Do You Measure It?

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Yesterday I raised several questions/concerns/thoughts about the realities of a Google AdSense service for podcasts. There’s another big issue I should have mentioned. I haven’t seen it talked about enough in the blog buzz.

How is Google going to measure this thing?

The rumors have been buzzing in the blogosphere that, before the end of the year, Google will release an AdSense-like service for podcasts and streaming audio. Right now there’s more speculation than details.

This probably means: (more…)

iTunes Adds ‘Podcasts on Podcasting’ Room to Directory

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

iTunes Podcasts on PodcastingiTunes has just added a "room" in their iTunes podcast directory titled, "Podcasts on Podcasting." Click here to check it out in iTunes.

If you are looking for new insights from the experts, there are some great shows listed (including yours truly). My question now is, how do you get to this "room" by browsing from the front page of the directory? I found the link posted in the Apple forums. I think the "rooms" idea is great. Maybe they will be adding a room-browsing feature soon.
