26 Podcasting Tips from Podcast Freq

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Anna Farmery of The Engaging Brand has started a series called A-Z of Podcasting on her Podcast Freq blog. She has posted A, B and C today and will be continuing with the series tomorrow.

“B = Beta” is a good reminder for me, not only in podcasting but much of what I do. Just get started and be willing to let things evolve. They don’t have to be perfect from the start.

(Still) No iPod Needed

Monday, March 26th, 2007

While I’m on the topic, check out how the Focus on Business podcast communicates the “no iPod needed” message on their podcast page—loud and clear.

Then enjoy and share the following video that spreads the word. I was reminded of this by reader, Adam Smith of RecordBetterAudio.com. Apparently my friend, colleague and PodCamp NYC lead organizer, John C. Havens, helped to spearhead this little ditty. If you’re reading this post by feed, you might need to click through to view the You Tube video below.

No iPod Needed

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Jason's PhotoIn the spirit of my recent rant on educating listeners that they don’t need an iPod to listen to podcasts, I’ve removed the photo of the iPod from the top of my blog. Instead I’ve posted my own picture.

Why did I put a photo of me? I noticed when I went to the summit in London a lot of people knew who I was, but many didn’t know what I looked like. I’ve noticed that I like knowing what bloggers look like when I go to their site. I also think it adds a welcoming feel to a blog. So I’ve added my photo. And yes, I am older than I look.

Establish Instant Credibility; Use a Mic Flag

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Mic FlagIf you do “on the street”-style recording for your podcast, a mic flag is a great way to give yourself some intstant credibility. What’s a mic flag? Think of what you see on every mic carried by a news anchor on TV. Now you get an idea of why this might give you some extra cred.

You can buy one here or, if you want to be resourceful, you can watch the following video about how to make one yourself. RSS readers may need to click through to view the video.

Podcasting’s Dirty Little Secret: Podcast Listenership Hitting a Plateau?

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Gartner Hype CycleUPDATE: Podcasting News offers the thought that “podcasting appears to be somewhere between their Peak of Inflated Expectations and their Trough of Disillusionment.”, quoting Gartner’s Hype Cycle.

Earlier this week I reported on statistics from the upcoming Arbitron/Edison Internet and Multimedia 2007 report. Despite a healthy upswing in people who had heard of podcasting (37% up from 22% in 2006), there was only small incremental increase in the number of people who have ever listened to a podcast (13% up from 11% last year). I’d like to offer further insight and information and then get some feedback on this matter.

Corporate Podcasting Summit | Podcast Content in the Corporate Context

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

Now that I’m back from London and had my jet-lag nap, I can finish posting my highlights from the Corporate Podcasting Summit. Here are some notes from an excellent presentation by Nick Saalfeld, Director of Wells Park Communications. His presentation was titled Podcast Content in the Corporate Context.

  • Interviews will trump a “presidential address” any day. Interview the CEO rather than having him just speak into a mic.

No Love for PodShow at the Corporate Podcasting Summit in London

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Their was an interesting panel on podcast sponsorships this afternoon. Actually, the most interesting part was, that on three occasions, the PodShow representative gave what seemed like a “political side step” answer to questions directed at him about numbers and examples from PodShow’s sponsorship campaigns.

One audience member asked for a ballpark figure of how many of PodShow’s podcasters have been able to quit their day job. Another asked to have an estimate of how much podcasters can make with PodShow sponsorships. Now, giving the benefit of the doubt, maybe he really didn’t “have the information with him.” But it seemed to me that he was either poorly prepared or purposefully vague.
