Dynamic Insertion of Podcast Ads | Todd Cochrane is Not Seeing the Whole Picture

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

I just read a post by Todd Cochrane (author of the first “podcast how to” book and CEO of RawVoice) condemning the dynamic insertion of ads in podcasts as DOA. I disagree. I think it’s only getting started.

First, a quick definition of dynamic insertion. This simply means that the podcast audio and the audio for the ad are put together on the fly rather than the ad being “hard” recorded into the original audio file. This allows the ad to change over time for the same episode. Now back to Todd’s opinion.

Podcasting Metrics Series Pt 9 | How Much is Your Podcast Worth?

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

It’s been a little while since I added to the series on podcast metrics. We’ve already gone over some of the usual statistics such as downloads, subscribers and bandwidth that give you an idea of the size of your audience. But there are a myriad of other statistics, beyond the size of your audience, that help determine the overall value or success of your podcast.

Google Reader Now Reporting Subscriber Numbers to FeedBurner

Monday, February 19th, 2007

You might have noticed a jump in your subscriber numbers in FeedBurner over the last few days. It’s because Google is now reporting the number of people subscribed to your feed using their service. Previously they just checked the feed content without giving this number. This includes people who are using Google Reader as well as Google Personal Home Page.

This will affect both blogs and podcasts since some people are using Google as a podcatcher.

Video with PodCamp NYC Organizers

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

Here’s a short video introducing the PodCamp NYC organizers and why they are each involved with the project. Thanks go to Kevin Shively of TV Worldwide who filmed this and will be filming portions of the event for us.

Yes, that is me on the upper-left looking zoned out. For whatever reason, the screen capture that You Tube is previewing in the player just happens to have caught me in one of those odd moments. So have a good laugh and then watch the video.

Should Your Blog and Podcast Be on the Same Blog/Site?

Friday, February 09th, 2007

Leesa Barnes brought up an issue that has been on my mind recently. Should your podcast and blog be on the same site/blog? I’m of the opinion that every podcaster should be a blogger as well. And the question of whether to have a separate blog for your podcast is an important one.

In my case I have done both. I have this blog on one site and then I have The Podcasting Underground podcast on another site. In the case of the PodCamp NYC site that I set up, it’s all on one site and blog. Same with Internet Business Mastery. Leesa and I both do this by using a category in Wordpress to separate out your podcast episodes.

Wordpress Plugin Recommendation | WP-Amazon for Quick Draw Affiliate Links

Wednesday, February 07th, 2007

I’m a big fan of using Wordpress for publishing podcasts. I’m also a big fan of affiliate programs for monetizing podcasts and blogs (getting paid for sales from people you refer to a site or product). One of the most ubiquitous affiliate programs is Amazon’s.

If you’ve ever used the Amazon Associate Program to create affiliate links on your site, you know that it’s not the quickest process. Well the process just got a lot easier for Wordpress users.

CES Panel Recording | The Right Way to Use Podcasting for Marketing

Sunday, February 04th, 2007

I’ve neglected letting you know that you can listen to a recording of the panel I participated in at the CES conference last month. Participants included Tim Bourquin, Eric Schwartzman, Wing Yu and Michael Geoghegan. We talked about how to use podcasting for business and marketing.

Eric recorded the session on his iRiver and posted it to his blog/podcast where you can listen to it. If you’re into PR, Eric’s podcast provides very interesting content.

First Sale of a Podcast Media Property (and what we can learn from it)

Thursday, February 01st, 2007

Tim Bourquin, founder of the Podcast and New Media Expo, has announced the sale of his podcast media property, Endurance Radio. As far as I know, this is the first time a podcast media property has been sold. The details of the deal have not been revealed, but there are still some very interesting insights to be found.

If you have an established podcast media property, selling your podcast is a possible solution to the podfading dilemma rather than letting things fizzle when you lose steam.
