Letter from Apple States They Do Not License the Term ‘podcast’

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Back in October Dave Gray, of TPN’s GlobalGeek podcast, sent a letter and $1 to Apple to pay for using the term "podcast". Apple sent the check back with an answer:

Podcasting Metrics Series Pt 3 | Measuring Downloads

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

In Podcasting Metrics Series Part 2, I pointed out the problem with looking at the # of hits to a file for estimating the # of downloads. A single download can result in many hits. The hits stat will always be bigger than the actual number of downloads.

So how can we get a more accurate idea of the number of downloads? Services that offer podcast metrics (e.g. Libsyn, Podpress, Feedburner, Podtrac, RadioTail Ripple etc.) track things such as the IP address of each request to a file to determine how many unique users have downloaded (or at least attempted to download) the podcast file. This leads to a more accurate, although still imperfect, measurement.

Free Online, On-Demand Podcasting Seminar from Apple

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

Here are three video tutorials on podcasting from Apple, titled The Podcast Recipe. They can be viewed online for free with Quicktime. I’m not sure why, but they don’t let you download them to watch on your video iPod.

There are three videos: Perform, Produce & Promote. Perform talks about voice and mic technique. Produce walks you through how to record and edit your podcast with Garageband. The Promote video is a just basic, but good, overview of how iTunes works as a podcatcher and podcast directory.

CBS Discovers the Value of Online/On-Demand/Social Media

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

In a press release today, CBS Interactive President Quincy Smith expressed his satisfaction with the month-old partnership with YouTube that allows for legal posting of certain clips of CBS shows. According to YouTube, the CBS content (which includes highlights such as an exploding semi and an office cat fight) has been viewed 29.2 million times since October 18.

CBS attributes some of the recent upswing in viewership to the online media initiative. This is the kind of action that is going to payoff for companies willing to embrace online/on-demand/social media.

Amplifying PR and Promotion with Podcasting and other Social Media

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

I’d like to expand on an excellent post from the Online Marketing Blog that discusses the idea of using social media to multiply your PR efforts–both for communicating to the consumer as well as the press.

There’s an increase in the use of social media both by end consumers and the media for tracking information that interests them. This includes: blog and news search engines, social news, social bookmarks, podcasts and video.

Podcasting Metrics Series Pt 2 | Measuring Your Audience: The Hit Myth

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

How do you measure the size of your audience? Is it the # of people who download your episode? Is it the # of people who consume each episode? Is it the number of feed subscribers? What about the people who download the file directly from your site?

Can you see where we run into problems with the semantics? We’re going to take a look at some words and stats used to measure the size of a podcast’s audience and what each term really means. In this post I’m going to discuss the "hit" myth.

Podcasting Metrics Series Part 1

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Recent conversations that I’ve observed or participated in on- and offline have given me a desire to write about podcasting metrics. I’ve decided to create a multi-part series on the subject. I’m not sure how many parts it will consist of, but it will continue over the next couple weeks and be interspersed with posts on other topics.

First let me share a couple reasons why this has been on my mind…

Podcasting for Search and the Long Tail

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

In my book, Promoting Your Podcast, I emphasize the importance of publishing your podcast to a blog. There are numerous reasons to do so. One key reason is to attract search engine traffic. Search engines such as Google like blogs. They know that the information is frequently updated.

Keep the search engines in mind as you produce your podcast, post your show notes and optimize your site (all discussed in my book). I point out in my chapter on search engine optimization that it takes time, patience and diligence to see the promotional/traffic effects.  You have to constantly try, track and tweak things (which is why I included a also included chapter on statistics & tracking).
