Writing My Podcasting Book

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

I’m sitting in my favorite neighborhood cafe on the Upper East Side of New York City where I live. There are some French speakers sitting next to me. I love New York for all the cultures I rub elbows with on a daily basis. I’m finding myself distracted since I understand French and love the sound of the language.

But the real reason I came here is to write my book on podcasting. I needed a change of scenery to get the juices flowing. I haven’t been very vocal about this book yet, but, suffice it to say, there are ideas in it that I’ve not seen in any other book (or site) on podcasting. I’m really excited about it. I’ve been writing this at a feverish pace to get it out on schedule but still pack as much content in as possible.

80% of Podcasts Never Make it to a Portable Player?

Friday, March 24th, 2006

Podcasting, for me, is fundamentally based on a listenening experience of control and convenience. The listener controls when, where and how they listen to the program.

(Podcasting is also based on the social media revolution and dissillusion with the mainstream “one-way-pipe” media that has spoon fed us for years now, but I want to focus on the control/convenience in this post.)

Geoghagen: “[Podcasters], Ask for What You Are Worth, Not What is Offered”

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

The title of this post is a quote from a great post by Michael Geoghagen, author of Podcast Solutions and a bright entrepreneur.

He talks about how too many podcasters are selling themselves short and accepting ad rates that are much too low. I think he’s right. The problem is that the podosphere is too stuck on the CPM model that the advertisers are used to. This is a new media that deserves new ad models.

Are Subscription Models Viable for Making Money with Podcasts?

Saturday, March 11th, 2006

This question is certainly on many podcasters minds. Whenever this question is posed, I follow up with another question: “Are we talking about entertainment or information (infotainment)?” I have a different answer for each.

Of course, in entertainment, someone like Ricky Gervais is going to have an easier time of building an audience willing to pay for what he has to offer.
